Description
Gynecomasty is a condition that involves the excessive development or hypertrophy of breast tissue in men, it also occurs in children. The breasts get bigger and their growth may be uneven.
Gynecomasty can occur when a young adolescent is going through hormonal changes typical of puberty. But it can also occur in newborns and adult men as they get older.
Some of the causes of gynecomastia apart from changes in hormone levels, may be with certain medications such as antidepressants, antibiotics, chemotherapy, drugs for prostate cancer, ulcers or drugs to treat cardiovascular diseases. Also anabolic steroids can cause gynecomasty .
Gynecomasty is diagnosed by certain tests, such as:

Requirements
Gynecomasty can be performed in healthy, emotionally stable men of any age. The best result is obtained when the skin is elastic and firm to adapt to the new contour of the lungs.
It is also recommended that the patient has a stable weight. It is not recommended in patients suffering from obesity or overweight. They are not considered good candidates either, if they drink alcohol and smoke frequently.
Consult with Dr. Franklin Peña experienced gynecomastia specialist today to analyze in detail the preparation plan.
Benefits
The benefits of Gynecomasty surgery or male breast reduction are physical and psychological. From the physical perspective, pronounced and flabby breasts are removed, which are unattractive in a man. This allows more defined muscles in the chest.
Unlike many other methods indicated to eliminate Gynecomasty such as hormonal treatments, diet, exercise and others, surgery usually produces immediate and permanent results.
It is an outpatient surgery, so you will only need one day of hospitalization.
Expected results
The results of a gynecomasty are visible from the first day, although you will have to wait between one and two months until the inflammation disappears completely.
The definitive results can be expected between 5 and 6 months, time in which the body will undergo skin adaptation and retraction. To see results of this surgery, visit our gallery
Intervention
The Gynecomasty surgery is usually done, on an outpatient basis, with a night of hospitalization. It usually lasts about an hour and a half, however, it will depend on each case, so Dr. Franklin Peña will give the indications to place, during the pre-consultation.
There are two types of interventions for gynecomasty :
Gynecomasty operation without glandular tissue
This is indicated when the patient only has accumulated fat in the breast, and these steps are followed to eliminate it:
- An incision of about 4 millimeters is made where the scar will hardly be perceived.
- Through this opening a liposuction of the area will be done, reducing the volume of fatty tissue that is there.
- Its firmness will be returned to the skin defining the chest muscles.
Gynecomasty operation with glandular tissue
If gynecomasty is also composed of glandular tissue, a liposuction will not be enough, and at the end it will have to be treated separately, since it is a harder fibrous tissue and more difficult to eliminate. In this case, the following will be done:
- A liposuction of the pectoral area is done, where the accumulated fat will be eliminated (as in the previous one).
- An incision is made in the lower half of the edge of the patient’s areola.
- The breast tissue is removed and its appearance is recomposed, paying special attention to the symmetry of the nipples.
Sometimes a small drainage tube is left to remove excess secretion from the wound.
Post-operative
The patient must be accompanied to the procedure with a relative or friend, since he will feel some discomfort during the first days after the surgery.
The first days you will notice inflammation, and a post-surgical girdle will be recommended for this type of surgery that will help lower the swelling, as well as medications that help with pain and prevent infections.
Most of the inflammation disappears in the first weeks, it can take three months until the final result is seen.
You are advised to limit your physical activity in the first days, avoiding heavy exercises during the first 3 weeks. Usually, it will be about a month before you can return to your physical activities normally.
You should avoid sun exposure from scars for at least six months. Sunlight can cause permanent changes in the pigmentation of the skin, causing darkening of the scars.
The final results are significant and permanent.
